Rotary Meeting                                                                            May 29, 2024
 
President Maver called the Rotary Board meeting to order at 7:31 a.m. We had a brief invocation followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and our 4-way test.  There were 21 Rotarians in attendance, either live or virtual.  We had a special guest, Maia Jones, Bay High School recipient of the Rotary Scholarship, along with her parents, Roger and Naila Jones. Also joining us was Mayor Paul Koomar, Mayor of Bay Village, who was our speaker today.

Old Business
Westlake-Bay Village Rotary Club will have a service project supporting the Literacy Cooperative with a $3000 donation, $1500 from club and $1500 from matching grant. The Rotarian service will be to remove plastic wrap and address stickers from undeliverable books.  This project will be executed during the 2024-2025 Rotary year. Motion passed without objection.
 
Amy presented on Big Day of Play for Big Brothers and Sisters on June 8, from 11-3 in the Upper Pavilion at Edgewater Park.  This is a fun event to support Big Brothers and Sisters.  You can register at bbbscke.org.events.  Any questions, you can reach out to msmith@gggscle.org.  Amy said that there are over 200 kids who need a Big Brother or Sister to be paired up with
 
Lisa mentioned the District contest for clubs with the biggest net gain in May.  There is a small monetary award available for the club with the biggest net gain.
 
Rotary Districts are sponsoring an End Polio Now Game at Progressive Field on Friday, August 2nd.  That is a free t-shirt night, fireworks, Dollar Dogs, and $2 Pregame in the District.  Contact Stew Buchanan (stewb1898@aol.com) or Al Tien (atien@me.com) for more information.  Seating is limited and you should register by July 16th at www.rotarydistricts6630.org.
 
New Business
There was an ArtFest meeting on Tuesday, May 28.  Andrew gave an update that we are approaching 60 artists, with a goal of 70 artists.  We may need to enlist the hope of some club members to recruit some more artists.  Mr. Appel will also be sending out a volunteer sheet for Art Fest Day, which is fast approaching on July 27th.
 
Gary gave an update about the Golf Outing, which is on October 11 at Mallard Creek, with a noon shotgun start
 
Terri updated us on Flavia, who will be attending next week’s meeting before she returns to her home of Spain next weekend
 
Our speaker was Bay Village Mayor Paul Koomar.  He gave us an update on things in Bay Village, here are some highlights:
  • Highest bond rating of AA from Moody’s for towns the size of Bay Village
  • Updated on the financial outlook of Bay Village
  • Community Services – Increasing services for Seniors
  • Departments report
    • Police – Great Community engagement from them
    • Recreation Department – Gave an update to the offerings from the department
    • Fire Station renovation is being planned
    • Capital Improvements – Almost $6 million in outside grants for Capital Improvements
  • Cahoon Park – Offers 2,000 feet of lakefront access on 116 acres of parkland
  • EPA Sewer initiative to stop the overflow of water getting into the sewers
  • Finally, Bay Village has lost 25 feet or erosion over decades and are working on stopping the erosion and creating ADA accessible trails to access the lakefront
